Upcoming Veteran Events: December 2020

Below is a living list of upcoming Veteran-related events for the month of December 2020. Visit the links to determine if they are in-person or virtual. If the event happens to be an in-person event, please adhere to the guidelines for keeping yourself and others safe during the COVID-19 pandemic: wear a mask, practice social distancing (at least 6 ft.) & washing your hands for at least 30 seconds or use hand sanitizer. Contacting the organizer beforehand may also be helpful. Due to state of things, it is strongly suggested you attend events virtually until such time where we can all get together safely once again.

As the military-civilian divide continues to grow, veterans need skills to translate what they did in the military for employers or higher education. In this PAVE connect session, storytellers/storytelling instructors Stephanie Garibaldi and Maureen Elias will share some tips on how to use storytelling to bridge that divide.

Wreaths Across America: Sacramento Valley National Cemetery

On December 16th, 17th, and 18th between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Wreaths Across America will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery to Remember and Honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of the country’s fallen heroes and the act of saying the name of each and every veteran aloud. Due to the pandemic, there will not be a event, but there will be laying of the veteran wreaths. All sponsored wreaths in 2020 will be placed throughout the day by volunteers. This is open to the public. To join in laying veteran wreaths, please visit the cemetery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on these dates.  All volunteers must wear a mask and gloves while on cemetery grounds. If you have special requests, please contact the volunteer Location Coordinator at fromo@svncsc.org to make those arrangements.

Creative Writing Workshop for Military Spouses & Caregivers

Military Spouses and Caregivers, it’s time to tell your story. Join author Seema Reza for a virtual creative writing workshop. Writing is a powerful tool for communication, self-discovery, and reflection. We will read a short piece of writing, see what makes it work, and use it to enter into our own stories. Bring a notebook and a good pen. Seema has led workshops with veterans, service members, healthcare workers, and university students. No writing experience required!

Join this session to learn how to create an engaging elevator pitch for promoting yourself. Knowing how to sell yourself and the value you bring could strike an interest with employers.  Join Rodney Lee, an Army veteran and employment analyst, for this interactive session and learn tips and techniques for creating effective elevator pitches.

National Wreaths Across America Day

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 2,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.

DADT Repeal 10-Year Anniversary Celebration

Join service members, veterans, their families and special guests from around the world to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) and to support the fight for transgender service members. Thanks to the repeal of DADT, over the past decade, lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members have served openly and proudly in the Armed Forces without fear of being dismissed because of who they are or whom they love.
